Why choose Colin M Smith for repairs

Repair it properly, from people who know what they’re doing

Sending your TV or Hi-Fi to a manufacturer warranty centre or a faceless postal repair service is a gamble. With us, your equipment stays local, and you speak to the same people throughout.

50+

Years repairing TV and Audio products

We have been fixing TVs and Hi-Fi equipment since 1970. That depth of experience means we have seen most faults before — and know how to fix them properly.

1
All

Major brands diagnosed and repaired

Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Philips, Hisense, Denon, Yamaha, Sonos — if it has a screen or a speaker, we can take a look, regardless of where you originally bought it.

2
Local

In-house workshop, not a postal service

Your equipment is assessed and repaired in our dedicated workshop in Forfar. No shipping it off to a central depot and waiting weeks. Drop it into Dundee, speak to someone in person, we'll ship it up to Forfar and get you a clear answer.

3
Fair

Honest advice on repair vs. replace

We will always tell you honestly if a repair is not economical. You will never leave having paid for work that did not make sense — and if a replacement is the better option, we can help with that too.

4
Common faults we diagnose

Recognise any of these? We can help.

These are the faults we see most often through our repair workshop. If your symptoms are not listed here, give us a call — the chances are we have come across it before.

No picture or blank screen

The TV powers on but the screen stays black, or you get sound but no image. Often a backlight, panel, or mainboard fault — all diagnosable in our workshop.

Television

Smart TV connectivity issues

Wi-Fi dropping, apps failing to load, or a smart TV that will not connect to your home network. We can diagnose software and hardware connectivity faults.

Television

No sound or distorted audio

TV picture is fine but there is no sound, or audio that crackles, buzzes, or cuts out. Could be an internal speaker fault, a board issue, or a connection problem.

Television

TV won’t power on

The set appears completely dead — no standby light, no response to remote or buttons. Power supply board faults are a common and often repairable cause.

Television

Hi-Fi system not powering up

Amplifier, stereo receiver, or integrated system that will not switch on, loses power unexpectedly, or blows a fuse repeatedly. Often a power supply or protection circuit issue.

Hi-Fi / Audio

Distorted or one-sided audio

Hi-Fi producing crackling, hum, or only outputting through one channel. Can point to a faulty output stage, capacitor failure, or a damaged channel on the amplifier board.

Hi-Fi / Audio

Why repair local

Why bring your repairs to us rather than posting it away

Postal and manufacturer repair services can mean weeks of waiting, no direct contact, and returning equipment that still is not right. We do things differently.

When you bring your equipment to our Dundee store, you speak to a real person who will look at it in front of you if needed. There is no automated ticket system, no holding music, and no wondering where your television has been sent.

As an independent business that has been serving Dundee since 1970, our reputation depends on being straight with people. If a repair is not worth doing, we will tell you — and we will not charge you just for finding that out.

With our repair inspection fee starting for just £29.99 - our engineer will identify the cause of the problem. We will let you know what is needed to make the repair and how much it would be. Giving you complete control if you wish to move ahead with the repair.

And because we also sell televisions and audio equipment, if a repair genuinely is not the right answer, you can browse replacements in the same visit — with no pressure and no commission-driven sales pitch.

Common questions

TV & Hi-Fi repair FAQs

Questions we are asked regularly at the Dundee store. If yours is not here, call us on 01382 224488 and we will do our best to help.

Do you repair TVs and Hi-Fi equipment you did not sell?

Yes — you do not have to have bought your equipment from us for us to repair it. We accept televisions and audio equipment from any retailer, of any age, provided the repair is economically viable.

Simply bring it in or call ahead on 01382 224488 and we will advise whether it is worth having us take a look.

How do I know if it is worth repairing rather than replacing?

This depends on the age of the equipment, the nature of the fault, and the cost of repair versus replacement. We will always give you an honest assessment before any work begins — if repair does not make financial sense, we will tell you so.

As a general rule, newer sets and quality Hi-Fi equipment are usually worth repairing if the fault is a component-level issue rather than a damaged panel. Call us and describe the symptoms — we can often give you an initial steer over the phone.

What brands of TV and Hi-Fi do you repair?

We work across all major brands. For televisions this includes Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL, and Philips. For Hi-Fi and audio equipment we regularly service Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, Pioneer, Cambridge Audio, Sonos, and others.

If your brand is not listed, call us and we will tell you whether we can help.

How long does a TV or Hi-Fi repair typically take?

Turnaround depends on the nature of the fault and whether any parts need to be ordered. Some straightforward repairs can be completed quickly once we have assessed the unit; others may take longer if specialist components are required.

We will give you a realistic timescale after the diagnostic assessment, and we will contact you as soon as the work is complete.

Do you charge for a diagnostic assessment?

Please call us on 01382 224488 for current information on our diagnostic process and any associated charges. We are always happy to talk through the symptoms first over the phone before you bring anything in.

My TV has lines or patches on the screen — is that repairable?

It depends on the cause. Lines or patches on a screen can result from a damaged panel, a failing T-con board, or a loose connection — some of which are repairable and some of which are not. A cracked or physically damaged panel is generally not cost-effective to replace.

Bring it in or describe the symptoms to us and we will advise honestly on whether a repair is viable before you commit.

Can you repair a Hi-Fi amplifier or receiver?

Yes — amplifiers and receivers are among the most common items we see in our Dundee workshop. Typical faults include channel failures, power supply problems, noisy volume controls, and protection circuit issues. Many of these are repairable at a sensible cost, particularly on quality equipment where a replacement would be significantly more expensive.

Can you help if my smart TV is having software or app problems?

Yes, to a degree. We can assist with connectivity faults, app loading issues, and software-related problems where a hardware or firmware fix is available. Some issues stem from the TV manufacturer’s platform rather than the hardware itself — in those cases we will tell you what options exist.

Call us on 01382 224488 and describe what is happening — we will give you an honest view on whether it is something we can resolve.

Where is the repair centre located?

Although our repair workshop is based at our Forfar store: 139 Castle Street, Forfar, DD8 3HN. You can bring your products into our Dundee branch at Unit C, Hawkhill Court, Mid Wynd, Dundee, DD1 4JG. We are close to the city centre with on-site parking. You are welcome to drop in during store hours or call ahead on 01382 224488 if you want to check anything before making the trip.

Think it might be repairable? Let’s find out.
