More than an appliance

The kitchen focal point that works as hard as it looks

Range cookers have long been associated with farmhouse kitchens and country homes — but modern range cookers are just as at home in a sleek contemporary flat as a traditional cottage. The slimmer 90 cm models can be accomodated in most kitchens, while wider 100 cm and 110 cm cookers make a bold statement in a more open kitchen.

The appeal goes beyond aesthetics. Multiple oven cavities let you roast at high heat while baking at a lower temperature simultaneously. A five or six-burner hob means no juggling pans when you are cooking for a crowd. These are tools built for the way serious cooks actually cook.

British-made brands like Rangemaster have spent decades refining what a range cooker should do — and it shows in the build quality, the responsiveness of the gas burners, and the consistency of the oven. Whether you are simmering a slow braise all day or roasting at 240°C, a well-chosen range cooker makes it effortless.

The choice of fuel type — gas, electric, dual fuel or induction hob — is one of the most important decisions you will make. Our team can help you work through your options based on your kitchen setup, your cooking style, and how your home is connected.

Common questions

Range cooker FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most often. Got something else on your mind? Call us on 01307 464 187 or drop us an email.

What is the difference between a range cooker and a standard freestanding cooker?

A range cooker is typically wider than a standard freestanding cooker (which is usually 60 cm wide) and features multiple oven cavities alongside a larger hob with more burners. Most range cookers start at 90 cm wide and go up to 110 cm or beyond. They are designed to offer more cooking capacity and flexibility — ideal for families, keen cooks, or anyone who regularly cooks multiple dishes simultaneously.

Range cookers also tend to be more of a design statement than a standard cooker, with a wider range of colours and finishes available.

Do I need a gas supply for a range cooker?

Not necessarily. Range cookers are available in gas, dual fuel, electric and induction variants. If you do not have a mains gas supply — or if you prefer not to use gas — an electric or induction range cooker works entirely from your electricity supply. Dual fuel models require both a gas supply (for the hob) and an electrical connection (for the ovens).

Do bear in mind that electric range cookers, particularly induction models, may require a higher amperage circuit than a standard 13 amp socket — it is worth checking with an electrician before you order.

What size range cooker should I buy?

The most common size is 90 cm, which fits in a standard cooker gap without any modification to your worktops. If you want more hob burners or an additional oven cavity, a 100 cm or 110 cm model may suit you better — but you will need to ensure your kitchen can accommodate the extra width.

Always measure the available space carefully, including the depth from the wall and the height to any overhead cabinetry. Our team is happy to talk through dimensions with you before you order.

Which brands of range cooker do you stock?

We stock range cookers from Rangemaster, Stoves, Belling and Leisure — four of the UK's most trusted and well-established range cooker brands. Between them, they cover a wide range of sizes, fuel types, styles and price points. Visit us in store to see current stock or call 01307 464 187 to discuss specific models.

Can you install a range cooker?

Yes — our team offers professional installation for full electric range cookers. For gas or dual fuel models, gas connection must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer; we can advise you on this when you order. Our installation service covers disconnection of the old appliance, positioning the new cooker, electrical connection, testing, and a demonstration of the appliance.

Visit our installation page for full details, or call us to discuss your specific requirements.

Do range cookers come in different colours?

Yes — colour choice is one of the distinctive features of range cookers, and one reason many buyers prefer them over a standard freestanding cooker. Rangemaster in particular offers an extensive palette, ranging from classic cream and black to deep blues, greens, reds and metallics. Stoves, Belling and Leisure also offer multiple colour options, though the range varies by model and size.

If you have a specific colour in mind, call us and we can advise on what is available and typical lead times for less common colours.

What extractor do I need above a range cooker?

As a general rule, your extractor or range hood should be at least as wide as the cooker beneath it — ideally wider. A 90 cm range cooker works best with a 90 cm or 100 cm hood. For larger 100 cm or 110 cm range cookers, a matching-width or wider canopy extractor is recommended.

Extraction capacity (measured in cubic metres per hour) should also match the size of your kitchen and the intensity of your cooking. Our team can advise on appropriate extraction when you are choosing your cooker.

Can I see range cookers in your showroom before buying?

Yes — we always encourage customers to visit in person before making a range cooker purchase. You can see models in our Forfar store. Call 01307 464 187 ahead of your visit to confirm which models are currently on display. No appointment is necessary.
