How to get your old appliance ready for collection
We do the heavy lifting — but there are a few things you need to do ahead of our visit to make sure collection goes smoothly on the day.
-
Disconnect from all supplies
Your appliance must be fully disconnected from any water, gas, or electrical mains connections before our team arrives. If you have chosen our installation service, our team will handle disconnection on the day. -
Empty it completely
Remove all food, clothing, dishes, and any other contents. We cannot collect appliances that still have items inside them. -
Defrost fridge freezers fully
If you are replacing a fridge or fridge freezer, it must be completely defrosted — not just switched off. Allow 24–48 hours. Draining any residual water is also appreciated. -
Clear a path to the appliance
Our team will need to manoeuvre the old appliance out of your home safely. Remove any obstacles from the route between the appliance and your front door before we arrive.
If you are unsure about any of the preparation steps — particularly around disconnecting a plumbed-in appliance — please call us on 01382 224488 before your delivery day and we will advise you.
Do not attempt to disconnect a gas supply yourself. If your appliance is connected to gas, our team will require confirmation that a qualified engineer has already disconnected it safely.
Clear, simple pricing — no hidden charges
Recycling prices are per appliance and are added at the point of ordering your new product. There are no surprise charges on the day of delivery.
Recycling is available to customers who have purchased their new appliance from Colin M Smith. Collection is carried out on the same visit as delivery. Prices correct at time of publication — please confirm at point of order.
Why responsible disposal matters: Old electrical appliances fall under the UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations. Simply putting them out with general waste is not compliant, and many materials inside — including refrigerants and certain plastics — require specialist handling. By choosing our collection service, you can be confident your old appliance is being disposed of correctly.
Questions? Come and see us in store
If you would like to ask about the recycling service in person — whether that is preparation advice, pricing for a specific appliance, or how to add it to an existing order — our Dundee team is happy to help.

The right way to get rid of an old appliance in Dundee
Old electrical appliances cannot simply go in the general waste bin. Here is why proper recycling is important — and why using our service makes it effortless.
Under UK WEEE regulations, electrical and electronic equipment must be disposed of through approved channels — not landfill. This applies to everything from washing machines to televisions. Dundee City Council provides a waste electricals drop-off service, but that means organising a trip yourself, arranging transport for a bulky item, and waiting for a suitable slot.
When you buy from Colin M Smith and add our recycling service, that entire process is handled on delivery day. You do not need to arrange anything separately or make an extra trip.
Large appliances like fridge freezers contain refrigerant gases that require specialist extraction before the unit can be recycled. Washing machines contain motors, drums, and mixed materials that need to be separated properly. Our recycling partner handles all of this compliantly, so you can be confident the materials are being processed correctly — not just tipped somewhere they should not be.
As a family business that has operated in Dundee since 1970, doing things the right way matters to us — not just for compliance, but because our customers and community deserve better than appliances ending up in landfill.
Recycling service FAQs
Everything you need to know about our old appliance collection service. If your question is not here, call us on 01382 224488.
Can I book recycling separately without buying a new appliance from you?
No — our appliance collection and recycling service is available exclusively to customers who have purchased a new appliance from Colin M Smith. We cannot arrange standalone collection for appliances bought elsewhere.
If you need to dispose of an appliance independently, Dundee City Council operates a waste electricals recycling service. You can also check the Recycle Your Electricals website (recycleyourelectricals.org.uk) for your nearest WEEE drop-off point.
When exactly do you collect the old appliance?
Collection happens on the same visit as your delivery — our team brings in your new appliance and takes the old one away on the same trip. There is no separate collection booking or second visit to wait in for.
If you have also booked installation, the sequence is: deliver and install the new appliance, then remove the old one.
Do I need to disconnect my old appliance before you arrive?
If you have not chosen our installation service, yes — your old appliance must be fully disconnected from all water, gas, and electrical supplies before we arrive.
If you have chosen installation, our team will disconnect your old appliance as part of the visit — so you do not need to do this yourself. You still need to ensure it is emptied and, for refrigeration, fully defrosted.
What if my fridge freezer is not fully defrosted when you arrive?
We are unable to collect refrigeration appliances that have not been fully defrosted. A unit that still contains ice risks water damage during transit and creates additional handling problems for our team.
If your appliance is not ready on the day, we may not be able to collect it on that visit — so it is important to plan ahead. Switch the unit off at least 24–48 hours before delivery and place towels around the base to catch any melt water. Call us on 01382 224488 if you have any concerns before your delivery date.
How much does the recycling service cost?
Prices depend on the type of appliance being collected. Audio and AV products start from £9.99. Most kitchen appliances, standard refrigeration, and televisions are £19.99. Larger items — American-style fridge freezers and range cookers — are £29.99.
See our full recycling price table above for a complete breakdown. Prices are added at the point of ordering and there are no additional charges on the delivery day.
Can you collect more than one old appliance on the same visit?
In some cases this may be possible, but it depends on the appliances involved and the capacity of the delivery vehicle on that day. Please call us on 01382 224488 before or at the point of ordering to discuss, and we will do our best to accommodate you.
What happens to my old appliance after you collect it?
Your appliance is passed to a specialist WEEE-compliant recycling facility. The materials are separated and processed according to UK regulations — metals, plastics, glass, and in the case of refrigeration, refrigerant gases are all handled appropriately by specialists.
None of the appliances we collect are sent to landfill. The goal is to recover as much usable material as possible from each unit.
Do you offer recycling across all your delivery areas?
Our recycling service is available across our standard delivery zone, which covers Dundee city postcodes (DD1–DD5) and the wider Angus and surrounding area including DD6–DD11, parts of Blairgowrie, Alyth, Coupar Angus, and more. See our delivery zone page for the full postcode list.
If you are outside our standard zone and are still able to receive delivery, please call us to confirm whether recycling collection is available to your address.
