Getting refrigeration right for your home

The right fridge keeps your family fed properly

A fridge or freezer is one of the hardest-working appliances in your kitchen — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Capacity, layout and features all make a real difference to how well your household runs week to week.

Too small and you end up cramming food in, restricting airflow and shortening the life of fresh produce. Too large and you are paying to cool empty space every day. We help you match capacity to your actual household — not just what looks impressive in a specification sheet.

The layout inside matters as much as the total volume. Adjustable shelving, a proper salad crisper, separate temperature zones, frost-free technology — these features have a direct impact on how easy the appliance is to live with and how long your food stays fresh.

We stock everything from compact undercounter fridges for Dundee flats to large-capacity American-style fridge freezers for busy family kitchens. Because we are a local Dundee business, you can see the appliances in person rather than guessing from a photograph.

If you are fitting out a new kitchen, upgrading from an old fridge that has let you down, or simply unsure what will fit your space — come into our Hawkhill Court showroom or call 01382 224488. We will talk you through the options without any pressure to buy.

Find the right fridge or freezer for your kitchen

Whether you need a slim undercounter fridge for a Dundee flat or a large American-style fridge freezer for a family home, we stock models to suit every kitchen layout, household size and budget.

Not sure which type suits your kitchen? The most common question we hear is whether to choose a combined fridge freezer or separate appliances. The answer depends on your kitchen space, how much frozen storage your family actually uses, and how your kitchen is laid out. Call us on 01382 224488 and we will help you decide quickly, without the jargon.
Looking for integrated refrigeration? We also stock built-in and integrated fridge freezers for fitted kitchens where the appliance needs to sit behind a cabinet door. Ask us about door-hinge compatibility and fitting when you get in touch.

Choosing the right refrigeration

Which fridge or freezer suits your household?

Not sure where to start? Use this at-a-glance guide to narrow down your options. If your situation does not fit neatly into one column, call us — we help Dundee customers make this decision every day.

Type Best suited to Key considerations Typical total capacity
Fridge Freezer Most popular Couples and families of 2–4, most standard Dundee kitchens Saves floor space versus two separate units. Check the fridge-to-freezer ratio — some models prioritise fridge room, others freezer. 200–350 litres
Undercounter Fridge Single occupants, small flats, utility rooms, garages Designed to fit under a standard worktop. Often paired with a separate freezer when extra frozen storage is needed. 80–150 litres
Upright Freezer Batch cookers, bulk buyers, households running a separate fridge Easier to organise than a chest freezer. Frost-free models eliminate defrosting. Usually placed in a utility room or garage. 150–250 litres
Chest Freezer Households needing maximum frozen capacity at lower running costs More energy-efficient than upright models. Harder to organise due to the top-opening design. Suits garages and outbuildings well. 100–400 litres
American-Style Flagship range Larger kitchens, families who want maximum capacity in one appliance Needs more floor and door-swing space. Measure kitchen width and access route carefully before ordering. Many include plumbed water and ice dispensers. 500–700+ litres
A note on American-style fridge freezers: These are the appliances most likely to cause a difficult delivery if measurements have not been checked beforehand. Before you order, measure the space width, door-swing clearance on both sides, the depth from the wall, and — critically — whether the unit can be moved through your hallway and kitchen doorways. We routinely help Dundee customers work through this checklist before purchase. Just call us on 01382 224488.

Refrigeration delivery in Dundee

Delivered to your door by our own local team

Fridges and freezers are bulky, awkward items that need careful handling. We deliver using our own in-house two-person team — so your appliance arrives safely and is positioned exactly where you need it.

Standard delivery to Dundee and Angus typically takes 2–3 days for in-stock items. Our delivery area covers Dundee city (DD1–DD5), Newport-on-Tay and Tayport (DD6), Carnoustie (DD7), Forfar and Kirriemuir (DD8), Brechin (DD9), Montrose (DD10), Arbroath (DD11), Blairgowrie (PH10–PH13) and more.

Extended delivery is available to St Andrews (KY16) and Perth (PH1, PH2) — additional delivery charges apply to these areas. See our delivery details page for current charges, or call us to confirm.

For American-style and large fridge freezers, our two-person team manages the heavy lifting. We will confirm access requirements with you ahead of the visit — please have the route clear and any doors to internal rooms opened up.

Click & collect is also available from our Hawkhill Court branch in Dundee, or from our Forfar, Arbroath and Kirriemuir stores, whichever is most convenient. If your postcode falls outside our standard delivery area, call 01382 224488 before ordering and we will confirm whether we can help.

Delivery and installation can be handled in a single visit. Our team will bring the appliance in, position and level it, check the door swing is correct, and confirm it is running properly before they leave. If you also need your old fridge or freezer removed on the same visit, we can arrange that too. See the services section below for full details.

Door Reversal Service

Most fridges are delivered with the door hinged on the right. If your kitchen layout requires the door to open the other way, we can reverse it before delivery. This must be requested at the time of ordering as the reversal is completed at our workshop prior to dispatch. Ask us when you buy.

Why shop local in Dundee

Why buying your fridge locally is worth it

A fridge or freezer is something you will open dozens of times a day for the next ten or fifteen years. It is worth getting the choice right — and that is harder to do from a website than from a showroom.

When you shop with a national retailer, the advice you get is only as good as a product filter. You cannot check whether a specific model will clear your kitchen doorframe, ask about the feel of the shelving, or find out which brands our customers have been happy with over the years.

At Colin M Smith in Dundee, you are speaking to people who handle these appliances every week — people who know which models have generated callbacks and which have served local families reliably for years. That knowledge does not appear on any product listing.

As a Euronics member, we have the buying power to stock all major refrigeration brands at competitive prices — without losing the personal service that comes from being a family business rooted in Dundee. If something goes wrong after your purchase, you are calling a local number, not a national helpline.

Our in-house delivery and installation team means one conversation from the moment you choose to the moment your new fridge is switched on in your kitchen. No hand-offs, no miscommunication, no waiting for a third-party contractor to show up.

Common questions

Fridge & freezer FAQs for Dundee customers

The questions we are asked most often. If yours is not here, call us on 01382 224488 and we will give you a straight answer.

Do you deliver fridges and freezers in Dundee?

Yes — we deliver throughout Dundee and the surrounding Angus area using our own in-house two-person team. In-stock items are typically delivered within 2–3 days. Our standard delivery area covers Dundee city postcodes DD1–DD5, plus Newport-on-Tay, Carnoustie, Forfar, Arbroath, Brechin, Montrose, Blairgowrie and surrounding areas.

Extended delivery is also available to St Andrews (KY16) and Perth (PH1, PH2) — additional charges apply. If you are unsure whether your postcode is covered, call 01382 224488 before you order.

Can you install a new fridge or freezer?

Yes. Our installation service covers freestanding and built-in refrigeration. Our team will unpack the appliance, position and level it correctly, confirm the door is hanging and sealing properly, and make sure everything is running before they leave. Contact us for details on what is included and pricing for your specific appliance type — the cost varies depending on whether the appliance is freestanding, undercounter, or built-in.

What is a door reversal and will I need one?

Most fridge freezers are supplied with the door hinged on the right, opening to the left. If your kitchen layout means this would obstruct a walkway, a worktop or another appliance, we can reverse the hinge direction so the door opens the other way.

This must be requested at the time of ordering — the reversal is carried out at our workshop before the appliance is dispatched for delivery. If you are unsure which direction suits your kitchen, tell us when you enquire and we will talk it through with you.

Will you take my old fridge or freezer away?

Yes — we can collect your old appliance on the same visit as your delivery. Before we arrive, please switch it off and empty it completely. If it is a fridge freezer or chest freezer, it will need to be fully defrosted — this can take 24 hours or more, so plan ahead. We arrange responsible recycling for appliances purchased from Colin M Smith.

See our recycling page for full details, including which appliance types we can take and what preparation is needed.

Fridge freezer vs. separate fridge and freezer — which is better?

A combined fridge freezer is the right choice for most standard kitchens — it takes up less floor space and a single delivery and installation is simpler. Separate appliances make sense when you need significantly more frozen storage than a fridge freezer can provide, or when you want to locate the freezer in a different room such as a utility or garage.

The honest answer is that it depends on your household. If you batch cook regularly or buy in bulk, a standalone freezer alongside an undercounter fridge will serve you much better than a standard combined unit. Give us a call and we will help you work it out quickly.

What should I check before buying an American-style fridge freezer?

American-style side-by-sides are wider and deeper than standard models, and the most common mistake is not checking measurements before ordering. We recommend confirming:

Kitchen gap width: Most models need at least 90–100 cm. Both door swings: The fridge and freezer doors open simultaneously, requiring clearance on both sides. Access route: Measure internal doorways and hallways to confirm the appliance can physically reach its destination. Plumbing: Models with a water or ice dispenser typically need a plumbed cold-water connection, though many offer a non-plumbed tank alternative.

Call us before you order and we will run through this with you. It takes five minutes and prevents a difficult delivery day.

What does frost-free mean and is it worth choosing?

A frost-free (or no-frost) appliance uses a fan to circulate cold air evenly, preventing ice from building up on the interior surfaces. The result is that you never need to manually defrost it.

Traditional freezers without this technology need periodic defrosting — typically once or twice a year — which is a time-consuming job. Frost-free models also tend to keep food at more consistent temperatures, which is better for long-term food quality. They typically cost a little more to buy, but for most families the convenience is worth it. We can advise on which specific models in our range include frost-free technology.

Can I collect a fridge from your Dundee store?

Yes — click & collect is available from our Dundee branch at Hawkhill Court, Mid Wynd, DD1 4JG. We will contact you once your order is ready to arrange a suitable collection time. We also offer collection from our Forfar, Arbroath and Kirriemuir stores if one of those is more convenient. Call 01382 224488 if you have any questions about your order.
