Find the right dryer for your home

Whether you are replacing an old machine or buying a dryer for the first time, we stock all three main types — plus integrated models for fitted kitchens. Not sure which is right for you? Read on or give us a call and we will talk it through.

Not sure which type of dryer suits your home? As a rough guide: if running costs matter most, go heat pump. If placement flexibility is the priority and you do not want to empty a tank, heat pump is also ideal. Condenser suits most homes without an outside wall. Vented is the most budget-friendly if you have the right setup. Call us on 01382 224488 and we will help you decide without the jargon.

Buying guide

Which tumble dryer is right for your Dundee home?

The three main dryer types differ in how they remove moisture from your laundry — and each suits a different home setup. Here is a plain-English comparison.

Type How it works Best for Running cost Needs outside vent?
Heat Pump
Most efficient
Recycles hot air in a closed loop, condensing moisture into a tank or drain. Anyone who wants to keep energy bills low over the long term. No vent needed. Lowest — typically uses around half the energy of a condenser model. No
Condenser
Versatile
Cools moist air to extract water, which collects in a removable tank. Homes without an external wall nearby. Tank needs emptying after each use. Moderate — higher than heat pump but lower than older vented models. No
Vented
Budget-friendly
Pumps moist air out through a flexible hose to an outside wall or window kit. Utility rooms or kitchens with easy access to an external wall. Lower upfront cost. Higher per cycle but lower purchase price. Yes
Not sure which type fits your space? Come in to the store or call 01382 224488 and we will ask a couple of quick questions about your home — then point you straight to the right models. We would rather you bought the right dryer than come back with the wrong one.

Why shop local

Why Colin M Smith beats the big names

When something goes wrong with an appliance ordered from a national retailer, you are usually on hold to a call centre. We are different — we are on the same street as you.

As an independent Dundee business, we have been in the same location long enough to build real relationships with our customers. If you call with a question about your dryer, the person who answers may well be the same one who helped you choose it.

We are a Euronics member, which gives us access to a wide range of brands and competitive pricing — without losing the personal service you get from a family-run shop.

Unlike online-only retailers, you can see models in person, ask questions face to face, and speak to someone who genuinely knows the difference between a heat pump and a condenser dryer rather than reading from a script.

Our in-house delivery and installation team means one point of contact from purchase through to the dryer being connected and running. No handing off between departments or third-party contractors.

Common questions

Tumble dryer FAQs

Here are the questions we hear most often about tumble dryers. If yours is not here, please give us a call on 01382 224488.

Do you deliver tumble dryers in Dundee?

Yes — we deliver to Dundee and the surrounding area using our own in-house team. In-stock items typically arrive within 2–3 days of ordering. Same-day or next-day delivery is sometimes possible on selected lines, so it is worth calling us on 01382 224488 if you need it quickly.

Click & collect is also available from our Hawkhill Court branch if that is more convenient.

What is the difference between a heat pump, condenser and vented dryer?

Heat pump dryers are the most energy-efficient type. They recycle warm air inside the drum rather than expelling it, which significantly reduces running costs. No external vent is required. They do tend to cost more upfront but pay back over time.

Condenser dryers collect moisture from the drum in a removable water tank. They do not need an external vent, so they can be placed anywhere with a power socket. The tank needs to be emptied after each use, or you can connect a permanent drain hose on compatible models.

Vented dryers push moist air out through a flexible hose to an outside wall or window vent kit. They are typically the most affordable option to buy, but require suitable access to an external wall and tend to cost more per cycle to run. Not sure which suits your home? Call us and we will help you decide.

Can you install a tumble dryer for me?

Yes. Our in-house team offers professional installation for freestanding and integrated tumble dryers. They will position the machine, make all the necessary connections — whether that is fitting a vent hose, setting up a condenser drain, or connecting a heat pump model — run a test cycle, and make sure everything is working correctly before they leave.

With around 35 installation slots available each week across Dundee, we can usually fit you in quickly. Visit our installation page for more detail, or call us to book.

Does a tumble dryer need to be near an outside wall?

It depends on the type. Vented dryers need a hose run to an outside wall or window, so they do need to be positioned reasonably close to one. Condenser and heat pump dryers do not require any external venting — they just need a standard power socket, so they can go almost anywhere in the home.

If you are not sure what type of access you have, give us a call and we will talk it through before you buy.

Will you take my old tumble dryer away?

Yes — we can remove your old tumble dryer on the same visit as delivery and installation. We arrange responsible recycling for appliances purchased from us. Please note that the removal and recycling service applies to machines bought from Colin M Smith.

See our recycling page for full details.

How quickly can I get a tumble dryer delivered?

Most in-stock tumble dryers are delivered within 2–3 days. We sometimes have same-day or next-day slots available on selected items — the best way to check is to call the store directly on 01382 224488.

If you are ordering a model that needs to come in specially, delivery is usually 3–5 days.

Are heat pump dryers worth the extra cost?

For most households, yes — particularly if you dry laundry regularly. A heat pump dryer typically uses around half the electricity of a comparable condenser model per cycle. Over several years of use, the energy saving usually more than covers the higher upfront price.

If you do only occasional loads, the payback period is longer and a condenser model may suit your budget better. Come in or call us and we can run through the numbers with you based on your usage.

What capacity tumble dryer do I need?

Drum capacity for tumble dryers is measured in kilograms (the weight of dry laundry the drum can hold). As a rough guide: 7–8 kg suits most households of 1–3 people, while 9 kg and above works well for families or anyone who prefers to dry large loads in one go.

Bear in mind that a tumble dryer drum should not be overfilled — clothes need room to tumble freely to dry properly and efficiently. If in doubt, call us and we will help you pick the right size.

Can I order online and collect in store?

Yes — click & collect is available from our Dundee branch at Hawkhill Court, Mid Wynd, DD1 4JG. Once your order is ready, we will let you know and you can collect at a time that suits you. Call 01382 224488 if you have any questions about your order.
