TV buying guide

OLED, QLED or LED — which panel is right for you?

The three main TV panel technologies each have real strengths depending on your room and viewing habits. Here is a plain-English comparison to help you decide before you buy.

Feature OLED QLED LED / LCD
Picture contrast Best in class — true black, pixel-level dimming Very good — local dimming zones Good — some backlight bleed
Colour accuracy Excellent, especially skin tones Excellent, particularly saturated colours Good across most models
Peak brightness Good — improving year on year Very bright — ideal for bright rooms Varies by model
Bright room performance Can wash out in very bright light Handles glare well Acceptable in most rooms
Dark room performance Unmatched — best for cinema setups Very good with dimming on Some blooming around bright objects
Response time / gaming Excellent — 0.1ms typical Good — 1–5ms typical Acceptable for casual gaming
Typical price range Higher investment Mid to premium Budget to mid-range
Best suited to Dark rooms, film enthusiasts, gamers Bright living rooms, sports, HDR content Bedrooms, everyday viewing, smaller budgets
Our honest take: For most Dundee living rooms with mixed lighting, a mid-range QLED delivers excellent results at a comfortable price. If your room is darker and you watch a lot of films, OLED is transformative. LED remains the best value for bedrooms or second rooms. Come in and we will show you the difference on our showroom screens.

Screen size guide

Choosing the right screen size for your room

Screen size is the single most common cause of buyer’s remorse with televisions — either too small for the living room or too large for the bedroom. Here is a simple guide based on typical viewing distances.

32″–40″
Compact

Bedroom or kitchen

Ideal for smaller rooms with a viewing distance of 1.2–1.8 metres. A comfortable size for a bedroom or kitchen worktop counter.

1.2m–1.8m away
43″–50″
Mid-size

Smaller living rooms

Works well in a living room where the sofa is 1.8–2.5 metres from the screen. A solid all-rounder for flats and smaller homes.

1.8m–2.5m away
55″–65″
Most popular

Main family living room

The most popular choice for Dundee family homes. Best at 2.3–3 metres viewing distance — fills the room without overwhelming it.

2.3m–3.0m away
75″+
Large format

Cinema-style rooms

For open-plan spaces, dedicated viewing rooms or anyone who wants the big-screen experience at home. Viewing distance of 3 metres or more recommended.

3.0m+ away
A practical tip before you measure: Measure the distance from your sofa to where the TV will sit, then divide by 2.5 — that gives you a rough minimum screen size in inches. So if you sit 3 metres (about 118 inches) away, you want at least a 47″ screen. Not sure? Bring your room measurements in and we will help you work it out.

Why shop local for your TV

Why Colin M Smith beats buying online

Buying a television from a national website means relying on a specification sheet and a photo. Buying from us means seeing the screen, asking real questions, and having the setup handled properly from day one.

When you buy a TV from a large online retailer, the screen arrives in a box and you are on your own. Connections, tuning, streaming account setup, cable management — all yours to figure out. Our installation team handles every step, and we demonstrate the set before we leave.

As a Euronics member, we have the buying power to stock competitive pricing across a broad range of brands, without losing the personal service that comes from being an independent, family-run business. You get the best of both worlds.

If something goes wrong after purchase, you speak to us — the same team who sold and installed the TV. There is no manufacturer helpline to navigate, no courier to coordinate, no outsourcing of the problem. We are on the same street as you.

For customers in Dundee covering postcodes DD1–DD11 and surrounding Angus areas, we offer local delivery using our own in-house team — the same people who carry out the installation — so there is a single point of contact throughout.

Common questions

TV & audio FAQs

Questions we are asked regularly about televisions, soundbars and installation. If yours is not here, call us on 01382 224488.

What is the difference between OLED, QLED and LED televisions?

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) produces light at a pixel level, meaning individual pixels can switch off completely to produce true black. This gives exceptional contrast and is the best choice for dark rooms and film viewing. Response times are also extremely fast, making OLED popular for gaming.

QLED (Quantum Light Emitting Diode) is a type of LED screen enhanced with a quantum dot filter. This produces very high brightness and saturated colours — excellent for bright living rooms and sports content. Peak brightness typically exceeds OLED.

LED/LCD is the most common and affordable technology. Picture quality has improved significantly and represents excellent value, particularly for bedrooms or rooms where the TV is used casually rather than for dedicated viewing. Come into our Dundee showroom and we can show you all three side by side.

How do I choose the right TV size for my room?

The simplest guide is to measure the distance from your sofa to where the TV will be positioned, in metres. Multiply that distance by 40 to get a rough recommended screen size in centimetres (divide by 2.54 for inches). So a 2.5 metre viewing distance suggests around a 55″ screen as a starting point.

That said, it also depends on the room. An open-plan space can carry a larger screen comfortably; a narrow bedroom benefits from something more compact. Bring your room measurements in and we will help you work it out. Most people who visit us leave wishing they had gone slightly larger — it is a common regret.

Can you install a television in my Dundee home?

Yes — we offer professional television installation as a standalone service or combined with delivery. Our team will unpack the TV, set up the stand or attach it to an existing suitable wall bracket, connect your Sky box, Freeview recorder, DVD player or any other existing equipment, tune all available channels, connect to your home WiFi (where applicable), and demonstrate the full setup before they leave.

We also offer an enhanced installation service that includes logging in to your streaming accounts (Netflix, Disney+, etc.) so everything is ready from the moment we leave. See our installation page for full pricing.

Do you offer wall mounting installation?

Yes — we offer a wall mounting installation service. Our team will attach your television to an existing suitable wall bracket (please note the bracket must already be in place and suitable for your TV), connect all equipment, and ensure the installation is clean and working correctly. This service can be combined with TV delivery.

If you need help selecting the right wall bracket for your television, speak to us in store or call 01382 224488 and we will advise.

Is a soundbar worth adding to my TV setup?

For most modern televisions, yes. Slim screen designs mean built-in TV speakers have very little room for drivers — the result is often thin, tinny audio that does not match the visual quality of the screen. A soundbar makes a significant difference to how films, sport and music sound, even at a modest price point.

We stock soundbars from entry-level single-bar models through to multi-channel systems with wireless subwoofers. Our staff can demonstrate the sound difference in store. If you are buying a new TV, it is worth considering a soundbar at the same time — we can install both together in a single visit.

What brands of TV do you stock?

As a Euronics member, we have access to a wide range of major TV brands. Our range includes televisions from Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic, alongside other leading brands. The specific models available change regularly, so the best way to check current stock is to call the store on 01382 224488 or browse online.

Can you take away my old television?

Yes — we offer an old TV collection and recycling service. We can remove your existing television on the same visit as delivery and installation, and arrange responsible recycling. This service is available for televisions purchased from Colin M Smith. A recycling charge applies — see our recycling details page for current pricing.

Please ensure the old TV is disconnected from the wall before our team arrives.

Do you deliver televisions in Dundee and Angus?

Yes — we deliver using our own in-house two-person team throughout Dundee (DD1–DD5) and across Angus including Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Brechin, Montrose and Arbroath (DD6–DD11). We also deliver to surrounding areas including Blairgowrie, Alyth and Coupar Angus.

Standard drop-off delivery is £14.99. If your postcode falls outside our main delivery area, please call 01382 224488 before ordering to confirm we can reach you. Click & collect from our Hawkhill Court branch in Dundee is also available.

What is the difference between a 4K and Full HD television?

4K Ultra HD has four times the pixel count of Full HD (3840 x 2160 versus 1920 x 1080). On larger screens — 43″ and above — this makes a visible difference to image sharpness, particularly with 4K source content from streaming services or 4K Blu-ray. Most new televisions are 4K as standard.

The benefit of 4K is most apparent at closer viewing distances and on larger screens. For a 32″ bedroom TV watched from 1.5 metres away, the difference is less significant. As a general rule, we recommend 4K for any main living room television — content availability has improved significantly and it is the standard going forward.
